In Swahili, they call them Twiga!

This is a photograh I took at the Metro Toronto Zoo in the winter of 1989. Poor thing looks a little chilly. And shy!

Twiga seems to be a perfect word to describe the giraffe. They seem to be completely composed of long sticks!

For general information on the giraffe, visit Planet Giraffe, which also has a link to a live Giraffe Cam.

Betty Leslie-Melville and her late husband, Jock, rescued two of the rare Rothschild giraffe back in the late 1970s. Their adventures with Daisy and Marlon are chronicled in the book, "Raising Daisy Rothschild [my edition was published by Warner Books and the ISBN is 0-446-89948-8]. Their home, Giraffe Manor is now open to visitors wanting to have an up-close-and-personal giraffe encounter while in Kenya. Their estate is also home to The Giraffe Centre, a place where Kenyans are taught about the rich wildlife heritage of their country, and now also open to visitors.

If you can afford it at all, please help support the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

Are you looking for the perfect gift for the giraffe lover in your life? Look no further than The Seasick Giraffe. It isn't easy finding giraffe gifts outside of zoo shops, these people have a wonderfully wide selection of items. They are also the home of the World Wide Giraffe Club.

I'm sure I'll be adding more giraffe info to this page over time, but I hope you'll start a bank to save for your own trip to Giraffe Manor, just like I have.
